Worked example. Triangle side 1/2 in = 0.5 in. Row height = 0.5 × √3 ÷ 2 = 0.433 in. With the horizontal-lines direction on US Letter (0.5 in margins, usable height 10 in) that gives 10 ÷ 0.433 = 23.1, so 23 full rows of triangles and 24 horizontal lines. With dots instead of lines the same grid has 24 dot rows, with alternate rows shifted by half a side (0.25 in).

How is isometric paper laid out?

In an isometric projection the three axes appear equally foreshortened and the angle between any two of them is 120 degrees, so a grid of equilateral triangles lets you draw along all three axes at the same scale. The generator draws three sets of parallel lines: one straight and two at 30 degrees to the horizontal (or 60 degrees, if you turn the grid 90 degrees). Triangle side and row height are linked by:

row height = side × √3 ÷ 2 (about 0.866 × side)

What options does the isometric paper generator have?

  • Side length: presets for 1/4 in, 1/2 in, 1 in, 5 mm and 1 cm, or any custom length.
  • Direction: vertical lines (the usual choice) or horizontal lines.
  • Lines or dots: a full triangle grid or dots at the corners of the triangles, in three dot sizes.
  • Layout and look: US Letter or A4, portrait or landscape, margins, line colour and weight, and an optional name and date line.

How do I print the PDF at the right size?

Open the PDF and choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Do not choose “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”, which rescales the paper and changes the square size. In Adobe Acrobat and Reader this is under Page Sizing & Handling; in Chrome and Edge set Scale to Default (100%); in Safari and Firefox set the scale to 100%. Pick the same paper size in the printer settings as in the generator (US Letter or A4).

To check, measure a few squares with a ruler: 10 squares of 1/4 in should be 2½ in, and 10 squares of 5 mm should be 50 mm. Home printers cannot print right to the page edge, which is why the generator keeps a margin (0.5 in or 10 mm by default).

Frequently asked questions

What is isometric graph paper?

Isometric paper is a grid of equilateral triangles. One set of lines is straight and the other two sets lean at 30 degrees to the horizontal, which is the geometry of isometric drawings, where the three axes are 120 degrees apart.

How do I draw a cube on isometric paper?

Start with a vertical line for one edge, then draw edges along the two diagonal directions of the grid. Every cube edge follows a grid line, and lengths along the three directions are drawn at the same scale.

Should I choose vertical lines or horizontal lines?

Use vertical lines (the default) for the usual isometric drawing, where upright edges are drawn straight up and down. Choose horizontal lines if you prefer the grid turned 90 degrees, with rows running across the page.

What does the spacing mean?

It is the side of each small triangle. The distance between neighbouring parallel lines is that side times √3 ÷ 2, about 0.866 times the side.

Is there an isometric dot paper?

Yes. Tick “Dots instead of lines” to get dots at the corners of the triangle grid, which is useful for sketching with less visual noise.

Can I print isometric paper on A4?

Yes. Switch the paper size to A4 and choose a side length such as 5 mm or 1 cm. The PDF page is exactly 210 × 297 mm.
