What graph paper sizes can I print?
Use a preset or type any size from 1.5 mm to 60 mm. Squares per sheet are the usable width divided by the square size, rounded down, and the same for the height:
| Square size | Across × down | Squares per sheet |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 in | 60 × 80 | 4,800 |
| 1/5 in (5 squares per inch) | 37 × 50 | 1,850 |
| 1/4 in (4 squares per inch) | 30 × 40 | 1,200 |
| 1 in | 7 × 10 | 70 |
| 2 mm | 95 × 127 | 12,065 |
| 5 mm | 38 × 50 | 1,900 |
| 1 cm | 19 × 25 | 475 |

What are quad, engineering and millimeter graph paper?
Common loose-leaf graph paper comes in three well-known grids: 4 squares per inch (“quad paper”, 1/4 in squares), 5 squares per inch (“engineering paper”, 1/5 in squares) and 10 squares per centimetre (“millimeter paper”, 1 mm squares). The generator has presets for 1/4 in and 1/5 in, and a custom field for any other size such as 1 mm. Graph paper is common in math and engineering classes, exercise books and lab notebooks.
What options does the graph paper generator have?
- Paper: US Letter or A4, portrait or landscape.
- Squares: presets for 1/8, 1/5, 1/4 and 1 in, and 2 mm, 5 mm and 1 cm, or any custom size in inches, millimetres or centimetres.
- Look: grey, light grey, blue, green or black lines in four weights. Light lines are good for drawing on top; bold ones for copying.
- Extras: a heavier line every 5th or 10th line, a border around the grid and a name and date line.
How do I print the PDF at the right size?
Open the PDF and choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Do not choose “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”, which rescales the paper and changes the square size. In Adobe Acrobat and Reader this is under Page Sizing & Handling; in Chrome and Edge set Scale to Default (100%); in Safari and Firefox set the scale to 100%. Pick the same paper size in the printer settings as in the generator (US Letter or A4).
To check, measure a few squares with a ruler: 10 squares of 1/4 in should be 2½ in, and 10 squares of 5 mm should be 50 mm. Home printers cannot print right to the page edge, which is why the generator keeps a margin (0.5 in or 10 mm by default).
Frequently asked questions
How do I print graph paper for free?
Choose the square size and paper size above, press Download PDF, open the file and print it at Actual size (100%). It costs nothing and needs no sign-up.
What is quad graph paper?
Quad paper (from “quadrille”, French for a grid of large squares) is graph paper with a fairly sparse grid, commonly 4 squares per inch, which is 1/4 in squares. Pick the 1/4 in preset to make it.
Which grid size should I use for math?
Use the size your assignment or teacher asks for. Common choices are 1/4 in squares (4 per inch), 1/5 in (5 per inch, often called engineering paper) and 1 cm or 5 mm squares in metric countries.
Can I get graph paper as a PDF in A4?
Yes. Switch the paper size to A4 and choose 5 mm, 1 cm or any custom size. The PDF page is exactly 210 × 297 mm.
What do the heavier lines every 5th or 10th line do?
They make the grid easier to read and to count, the way many pads have a darker line at regular steps. Choose “5th line” for a heavier line every five squares or “10th line” for every ten.
Why does my printed graph paper not match the size I picked?
The print dialog was probably set to “Fit to page”. Print at Actual size or 100%, then measure ten squares with a ruler: ten 1/4 in squares should measure 2½ in.
