Engineering Paper
Engineering paper is graph paper with 5 squares per inch, a light green grid and a header. Pick Letter or A4 and download the PDF; print at 100% so each square is 1/5 in.

How is this engineering paper set up?
- Grid: 1/5 in squares (5 per inch) in light green, with a heavier line every 5th line, so heavy squares are 1 inch.
- Header: a name and date line at the top.
- Border and margin: a border around the grid and an unprinted margin around it.
Everything can be changed: 1/4 in or a custom grid, grey or black lines, no heavier lines, landscape. For a plain grid see printable graph paper; for 3D sketches use isometric paper.
How do I print the PDF at the right size?
Open the PDF and choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Do not choose “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”, which rescales the paper and changes the square size. In Adobe Acrobat and Reader this is under Page Sizing & Handling; in Chrome and Edge set Scale to Default (100%); in Safari and Firefox set the scale to 100%. Pick the same paper size in the printer settings as in the generator (US Letter or A4).
To check, measure a few squares with a ruler: 10 squares of 1/4 in should be 2½ in, and 10 squares of 5 mm should be 50 mm. Home printers cannot print right to the page edge, which is why the generator keeps a margin (0.5 in or 10 mm by default).
Frequently asked questions
What is engineering paper?
Engineering paper, or an engineer’s pad, is graph paper used for problem sets and calculations. It is traditionally light green or tan, may have four, five or ten squares per inch, and has an unprinted margin.
What grid size is engineering paper?
Five squares per inch (1/5 in squares) is the size often called engineering paper. Pads with four or ten squares per inch also exist. This page starts at 1/5 in with a heavier line every inch, and you can switch to 1/4 in or a custom size.
Why is engineering paper green?
On real pads the faint green grid is printed on the back and shows through, so it often disappears when the page is copied or scanned. On a home printer the grid is on the front; choose light grey or a thin line if you want it to fade in scans.
Do I need engineering paper for homework?
Some engineering professors in the US and Canada require homework on engineering paper. Check what your course asks for.
Can I print engineering paper on A4?
Yes. Switch the paper size to A4. The 1/5 in grid stays exactly 5.08 mm.
Can I turn off the header or border?
Yes. Untick “Name and date line at the top” or “Border around the grid”, and set “Heavier line every” to None for a plain grid.
