Print at Actual size / 100%, not “Fit to page”, or the squares will come out the wrong size.

Worked example. US Letter, 0.5 in margins, 1/2 in rows: each row is 0.5 in plus a 0.25 in gap. 13 rows take 13 × 0.5 + 12 × 0.25 = 9.5 in of the 10 in available, so 13 rows fit.

0.5 in margins on Letter, 10 mm on A4, a gap of half the row height after each row.

How to use handwriting paper

  • Small letters (a, c, e, o) sit on the baseline and reach the dashed midline.
  • Tall letters and capitals (b, d, h, T) reach the top line.
  • Letters with tails (g, j, p, y) go below the baseline into the gap.

For older students, regular wide or college ruled paper is the next step.

How do I print the PDF at the right size?

Open the PDF and choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Do not choose “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”, which rescales the paper and changes the square size. In Adobe Acrobat and Reader this is under Page Sizing & Handling; in Chrome and Edge set Scale to Default (100%); in Safari and Firefox set the scale to 100%. Pick the same paper size in the printer settings as in the generator (US Letter or A4).

To check, measure a few squares with a ruler: 10 squares of 1/4 in should be 2½ in, and 10 squares of 5 mm should be 50 mm. Home printers cannot print right to the page edge, which is why the generator keeps a margin (0.5 in or 10 mm by default).

Frequently asked questions

What is handwriting paper?

It is lined paper where each writing row has a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline. Lowercase letters reach the dashed line and capitals and tall letters reach the top line.

Which row height is right for kindergarten?

Young children usually write bigger, so start with the 3/4 in rows and move to 1/2 in rows as letters get smaller. Follow what your child’s teacher uses.

Is there space between the rows?

Yes. Each row is followed by a gap of half the row height, so descenders (g, p, y) do not run into the next row.

Can I print handwriting paper on A4?

Yes. Switch the paper size to A4. The PDF page is exactly 210 × 297 mm.

Can I add a name line?

Yes. Tick “Name and date line at the top”.
